Hike along the coast

by Northernmost on May 27, 2012 in Activities & Work, Hilary, Lyra, Thunder with No Comments

Today we introduced our youngsters, Hilary and Lyra, to packing. Since they are still young it’s too early for them to carry any weight on their backs. Instead we filled their packs with lightweight stuff, such as clothes and blankets, to create the feel of a full load but with a minimum of weight. Both girls got used to having a bulky pack on their back in no time and showed great promise for the future. “Uncle Thunder” came along for moral support and we had a lovely day on the trail, enjoying the fresh breeze from the ocean and lunch on the sunny rocks.

Lyra and Hilary did great on their first packing excursion.

“Uncle Thunder” came along to show the girls the ropes.

Hilary - always smiling.
Thunder is a perfect trail companion - focused on his job and relaxed during breaks.

Spring cleaning

by Northernmost on May 19, 2012 in Hilary, Lyra with No Comments

MAY is a month of bathing and grooming here at Northernmost and we started off with our 9-month-old girls Hilary and Lyra today, who looked this nice once they were ready…

Mtn Home’s Northernmost Hiking Hilary – “Hilary”.

Sledog Dream Leaper – “Lyra”.

It’s hard work being groomed! ;-)

The grass game

by Northernmost on May 16, 2012 in Daily life, Hilary, Lyra with No Comments

Kongs, rope toys, rings and balls…turns out a mouthful of grass is all you need to have fun! :-)

Hilary has grass in her mouth and Lyra is eager to share.

This time around, Lyra is the one being chased.

Sunday run

by Northernmost on May 13, 2012 in Activities & Work, Leia, Thunder, Tuisku with No Comments

A sunny Sunday afternoon but still cool enough to go carting. Some stubborn patches of snow remain in the forest but it’s looking more and more like spring every day. Our Mals are still in full winter coats but it’s just a matter of time before they’ll start shedding. We’re planning to start bathing and grooming during next week’s long bank holiday. Seven dogs in four days shouldn’t be too bad? On today’s run Thunder and Leia worked in wheel and Tuisku in single lead and everyone did really well in their positions. Good dogs :-)

Tuisku waiting for the word go…

And off they went!

About halfway into the trail.
We completed 22km today (13.6mi), a suitable distance for a "warmish" day.
We have a nice forest trail near home which is ideal for carting and biking.
Blue skies ahead!

Look at Tuisku's face :-)
Tuisku in lead, Leia and Thunder in wheel.
The trail has dried up nicely since last weekend.
Leia (black & white) is a strong girl who works well both in wheel and in lead.

As a nice Friday surprise, a copy of the new edition of Barbara A. Brooks and Sherry  E. Wallis’ The Alaskan Malamute Yesterday and Today arrived in the post today. We already have a copy of the first edition of this book but just had to order this second edition too, because guess who is featured on the back cover?! Our Hilary – Mtn Home’s Northernmost Hiking Hilary!!

In addition, the front cover features a photo of Hilary and Titan’s grandfather Ch. MACh, U-CDX Arcticdawn’s Guardian Spirit UDX, WTD, WLD, WWPDX, “Atka”, who is the first Dual AKC Champion Alaskan Malamute. Congratulations to breeders Sue and Roy Fuller and Raissa Hinman for having their dogs selected for this comprehensive book on the breed.
