Tuisku’s son Fi Ch Tulisalon Northern Shaman, aka Joiku (Keikewabic’s Tundra Tuisku x Night Trail Full Moon Whispers), won Best of Breed and was awarded Best Mover at the Finnish National Specialty show on April 12, 2014, under judge Marianne Holm. We send out big congratulations to Joiku’s breeder Susanna Kauppi and to his owners Jenni Holopainen and Jarmo Leppänen of kennel IcyStar’s!!
Jenni Holopainen together with BISS Fi Ch Tulisalon Northern Shaman and BOSS Lumikeijun Birta Katla who is owned by Sonja Sarmaala. Congratulations to everyone involved!
During our trip to Drevdagen in February we met up with Toni Chrillesen of Unavoq Alaskan Malamutes who was holidaying in Dalarna together with family, friends and Malamutes. Toni had a litter after our Tuisku in 2010 and two pups from the litter, Shila and Tocho, were in Dalarna on holiday. We took some pics of Tocho who reminded us a lot of his daddy in both personality and looks – a smiley, happy boy with an active and outgoing personality. It was great fun to catch up with Toni and meet Tuisku’s kids for the first time; maybe we’ll see them again next year 🙂
Unavoq’s Extreme North Tocho at 3.5 years of age.
His daddy Tuisku at 8 years of age.
The coat is shorter but the resemblance is still obvious. They both have a star at the centre of the forehead – although Tuisku’s has faded a little as he has gotten older.

We’ve been away on a quick visit to Dalarna to meet with Ian and Aimee and Mark and Allison from the UK who are in Sweden on holiday together with their Alaskan Malamutes. Ian and Aimee own Hilary’s full siblings Leader and Twisp (from a different breeding) and this year it was premiere for Twisp’s pups, Rolo, Sasha and Rossi, to gain some working experience on snow. We spent two sunny days together in Drevdagen in northwestern Dalarna which has plenty of beautiful trails and is quickly becoming a popular vacation spot for mushers from all over Europe. It was a lovely break from the dull weather we have had on the coast this winter and a great chance for Hilary and Wilder to share trail with two teams of friendly dogs. We had plenty of opportunities to train passings and trail etiquette which is an invaluable experience, especially for a young dog like Wilder. It doesn’t look that far on the map but it took about twelve hours to drive down to Dalarna (including breaks for the dogs) but it was well worth it!

Ian with the Packice team – Leader and Twisp in lead, Sasha in team and Dash and Rolo in wheel.
Mark and his team out on the snowy trail.
On the first day Fredrik and I skijored with one dog each. The trails were quite heavy in some places.
Hilary and Fredrik passing by!
So much snow – the dogs were in seventh heaven!
On the second day, Wilder and Hilary worked in front of our new Polaris Nordic sled.
Wilder at 13 months of age.
It was fun to spend some time with “the twins” and we could see many familiar Mountain Home traits. Leader and Twisp were born in 2010 and are one year older than Hilary.
It was also fun to get to know Twisp’s lovely nine-month-old pups. Rolo is the name of the handsome boy looking through the fence.
Fredrik and I stayed at the cosy Mon Gård in Storbo, just a short drive from Drevdagen.
Snow is lacking in many parts of Sweden this winter – but not here!
Thank you Aimee, Ian, Allison and Mark for a great time! We hope to see you again next year!
It’s been a busy couple of week here and the blog has not been updated for a while. To bring the blog up to speed I have published a post retroactively about a nice Dayhike to Pahtajärvi that we went on during our brief holiday in Lapland this month.
Last weekend Wilder took part in his first official event at the Arctic Circle Dog Show in Överkalix. This national show is situated about 259 km (160 miles) to the north of us but is actually one of the shows that are closest to where we live. Since we have very few shows in northern Sweden during winter, we try to grab every chance we have for ring training during summer. The judge at this event was Erna-Britt Nordin who awarded Wilder a 1st, but without HP this time, as she felt that his head needs to mature a bit. Overall the critique was very nice and she was very pleased with his temperament.
So far, Wilder seems to enjoy showing and is happy and alert in the ring,
Standing for the exam – there’s not much coat on Wilder at the moment.
…on the move.
BOB at the Arctic Circle Dog Show, and Best in Group-4, was FI MVA Neatut Kadluk, aka “Jyry”, who is a son of our boy Thunder. Jyry performed beautifully in the ring with his breeder Anne Korhonen and seems to have exactly the same sweet personality as his daddy. In fact, they even share the same name; kadluk means thunder in one of the Inuit languages.
Jyry, who is now also a Swedish Champion, showed off his balanced movements in the group final.
BIG congratulations to his owners Anne Korhonen and Jouku Mikkonen!!
Tuisku’s handsome son Tulisalon Northern Shaman, aka “Joiku”, became Finnish Champion today when winning Best of Breed at Hyvinkää, Finland. He gained his title on his 3-year birthday – what a way to celebrate!! We extend a big congrats to Joiku’s breeder Susanna Kauppi and to his owners, Jenni Holopainen and Jarmo Leppänen. Joiku finished the day by going Best in Group-2!

Joiku Best of Breed at Hämeenlinna two weeks ago, under judge Juha Putkonen, Finland.
We send out a big congratulations to breeder Toni Bøgemose Chrillesen of Unavoq Kennels in Denmark, as all puppies in the Extreme North litter between Keikewabic’s Tundra Tuisku, WTD, WPD and DKCH Unavoq’s Dakotah Uniq, born in September 2010, have now been through their health exams with excellent results. All seven pups have A hips, free elbows and clear eyes. Big congratulations also to Bettina and Anders Lübbert who co-own the dam and did an excellent job of raising this litter. Tuisku is very proud of his kids 🙂
We did a routine thyroid test on Tuisku during September and as expected the result was thyroid normal and negative for TgAA. Since Tuisku is already seven years of age, and is negative for TgAA (Thyroglobulin Autoantibodies), the risk of him developing this disease at a later stage in life is quite small. For this test we used the laboratory at the University Animal Hospital in Uppsala, Sweden (SLU). If you live in Sweden and wish to test your dog, you can download This form and bring it to your vet when you take the blood sample. Remember to make the appointment in the beginning of the week, to make sure the sample doesn’t get stuck in the mail over the weekend. We recommend using the following alternative on the form: Tyreoidea: Fritt-T4+Tot-T4+TSH+TgAA (hund).
It’s always great to receive good news about health!
Our friend Toni Bøgemose Chrillesen of Unavoq Kennels in Denmark recently organized a Puppy Party for the Tuisku x Uniq litter. The pups are now 9 months old and are growing up fast. Here’s a video from the weekend showing at least five of the siblings mingling with some older friends. I showed the video to Tuisku and he got very excited watching his kids, lol. Lovely to see so many dogs having fun together. Thanks Toni, and Bettina & Anders, for doing such a great job with this litter!
