When all the chores are done in the evening we usually take a couple of dogs and head for the beach. Last night it was Titan and Wilder’s turn to come along for a swim. We stayed on the beach until the sun set in the ocean, like a blazing ball of fire. ♥ Magic moments of summer ♥
It has now been a week since Wilder arrived in Sweden and what a great week it has been! Wilder has settled into his new home in no time and much is thanks to Hilary, who has been a great “play nanny” to Wilder, keeping him busy and loved all week. Apart from a visit to the beach with Tuisku, a forest walk with Titan, and a visit to town today, Wilder has spent his first week in Sweden mostly in our home and garden, getting used to our daily routines. I’m glad I bought a big supply of toys before he arrived, as he and Hilary have had a blast playing with these KONG and rope toys all week 🙂
The Five Knot Rope Toy is great for sharing. The only downside is that it quickly gets grubby when left out in the garden. We pop ours in the washing machine and let them air dry. And if they get too grubby we replace them with new ones, as these toys are luckily among the more affordable.
Quality rope toys are great for itchy gums.Wilder lost two of his baby teeth today 😉
This was the biggest rope toy we could find – it’s very popular with our Mals but not 100% durable. After each play session there are pieces of blue yarn left in the grass.
The KONG Stuff-A-Ball is Hilary’s favourite, she picks it up and makes Wilder chase her around. Since this toy has two rope ends it is good for two dogs sharing. The ridges are designed to clean the dog’s teeth and the toy can be stuffed with yummy snacks to make it even more appealing.
The KONG Extreme Goodie Bone made from ultra-tough black rubber is a big favourite with most of our dogs but so far Wilder hasn’t shown any interest in this toy. Right now he doesn’t like the smell of it but I don’t think it will take long before he realises that this toy is FUN 🙂
Wilder hasn’t shown any interest in the KONG Dental yet either. Maybe this toy
is still a bit too big for him?
The KONG Tails is popular with our Mals but if a heavy chewer is left unsupervised with this toy for too long, the blue “tails” will start to break off. Instead of being available to the dogs on a daily basis, the KONG Tails is better used as a treat during training, or as a toy to bring along to puppy class.
Hilary is a great teacher, she gets most pleasure out of sharing her toys with her friends.
It’s been a good first week 🙂
With a new puppy at home we spend a lot of time on establishing good relationships between the new pack member and our older dogs. Hilary has done a wonderful job of welcoming Wilder and they are already the best of friends. On Monday we introduced Wilder to Titan during an evening walk in the woods and yesterday it was eight-year-old Tuisku’s turn to spend some one-on-one time with our new boy. Wilder is a cool kid who doesn’t get overly excited about things. He is keen to make friends but at the same time has a streak of independence about him. When he meets new people he is curious and likes to give kisses, but in a calm and polite sort of way. I think he’ll have many different pet names as he grows up, but right now we call him Mr Cool 😉
Hello, what’s your name?
Maybe we’ll just sit here for a while and smell the dandelions together.
We’re having an early summer here on Sweden’s northern coast. 25ºC (77º F) and hardly no wind.
Tuisku is more comfortable now when most of his underocat is gone. It took two baths and lots and lots of brushing, as his winter coat was really thick!
As always, Tuisku got the zoomies as he just looves being near water.
Looks like Wilder is a Water-Mal too. Hopefully he’ll be equally happy about having a bath at home. Tuisku has always loved to swim in lakes, rivers and the ocean – but for some reason he loathes the bathtub!
We stayed at the beach till sunset. The world is so incredibly beautiful this time of the year. I’m having “press pause moments” at least once every day ♥
I haven’t had much time to blog lately as we have been busy with different building projects here in Nedre Bäck. Yesterday we completed the new puppy pen which will be Wilder’s outdoor play room when he arrives. If we have a litter in the future, this is where the pups will be having their first experiences outdoors. We built the pen in a sunny corner of our garden where the snow melts quickly in spring. Thanks to the breeze from the lake it never gets too warm and there are also concrete paving slabs behind the dog house where our Mals can cool down during hot summer days. It took some hard work to get everything ready but we are really pleased with the project 🙂
The dog house is built mainly from recycled wood. There is insulation in the floors, walls and roof but there are no dividing walls inside. We figured it would be nice for puppies to be able to sleep together and the tunnel inside also creates a fun place where they can play hide and seek.
With one project completed, there is still plenty of work in progress in and around our home. Right now we are working on a small wooden deck outside the door that leads to one of the fenced play areas. Hopefully we’ll get everything ready in time for Wilder’s arrival later this week. I just received a home delivery of a box of toys that I ordered online. “Safe puppy toys – check!”
We went for a long walk along the coast with Gemma and Thunder today. In spring and summer the coast is our favourite place to rewind and recharge our batteries. Our Malamutes love to play on the rocks and in and out of the water, it’s like a huge play park where they can run around for hours before finally settling down. Seeing our dogs so happy makes us happy, and I guess that’s what having dogs is all about 🙂
Gemma and Thunder were WILD today!
Even Gem, who isn’t normally keen on water, played with the waves today and got wet!
Must be that spring in the air?!
Quality time ♥
We often notice that new rocks have been added to the pile, but we never see any people around…
My favourite dog is always the one I’m spending time with.
Thunder is only 9 years of age, but he’s the oldest dog in our pack and deserves some extra TLC.
Gem loves to run off leash but we don’t trust her everywhere as she likes to chase birds and small animals when she gets the chance. The coast, however, is a good place to practise, as there are no roads or people anywhere near.
She found a patch of snow to have a good roll in. In a week or so, all traces of winter will be gone.
It was a beautiful today and if the forecast is right we have a warm and sunny week ahead of us.
Maybe spring and summer is finally here?
After two weeks of warm weather our winter is definitely over. We still have plenty of snow but it doesn’t hold for us to ski or sled on, and the dogs punch through easily, so we have had to accept that the sledding season is over for this time.
Today we took Hilary and Thunder on a walk in Skellefteå which is our nearest major town, situated about 30 minutes from our home. It’s a great place for walking the dogs and socializing them in a busier environment than the quiet country road at home. We went for a two-hour walk along the Skellefte River and watched the last remnants of winter pass us by.
When we go on our town walks we always bring our clickers as it’s a great opportunity to train our dogs to walk on a loose leash, pass other dogs, joggers, bikes etc., and stay focused on us, rather than on everything else. For our “country bumpkin Mals”, staying focused can sometimes be a challenge, but Hilary and Thunder did well today.
During our walk we passed Skellefteå’s beautiful country church, maybe Fredrik and I will get married there next year? Or maybe we’ll get married on top of a mountain, you never know 😉
I always feel a little blue when the winter ends, as I can never get enough of sledding and skijoring, but luckily the sadness only lasts for a day or two. Now we will take care of some spring chores at home before kicking off some off-snow activities. There are so many fun things to do in summer – hiking and packing, carting, agility, tracking and more. I hope the last bit of snow will be gone soon!
Have a happy weekend everyone 🙂
Did you turn the lights off on Saturday night? We did, and spent the evening by a campfire. The moon, the stars and beautiful northern lights lit up the sky. A memorable Earth Hour 2013.
It’s been a beautiful week with calm weather and clear blue skies. We’ve been making the most of every day as we’ll soon need to take a brief break from sledding due to our girls coming into season. This week we’ve also been busy thinking hard about what to name our puppy who will be joining us later this spring. After writing down a long list of options, we ended up choosing the name that came first to us. But more about our puppy news later, have a great weekend everyone 🙂
Fredrik has travelled many miles on the Skidoo this winter, working hard to keep our trail open in between snowfalls. Right now the trail is in great condition so fingers crossed we’ll have no more snow this winter! I think what we have right now is PLENTY!!
Today was a perfect day for just staying home and being lazy. I took some pics of Hilary while she was playing with her favourite black Kong. This toy disappears in the snow during every snowfall but Hilary always finds it and brings it up to the surface again 🙂
If we sit pretty, maybe we’ll get a treat??
There’s a blizzard raging outside so instead of being out sledding I’m catching up on some work in front of the computer today, even though it’s Saturday. The snow is really dumping down right now so I wonder if I’ll have to shovel my way into the dog pens in the morning??
Have a happy weekend everyone!
Our Leia Bear is 8 years old today! We celebrated her birthday by going for a long walk in the sunshine. The thermometer showed +9C (48F), so it’s too warm to work the dogs in harness but hopefully it will cool down again by the end of the week. Leia loves to go on off-leash walks and play rough games in the snow with her buddy Thunder. Ever since they first met (when Leia was 8 weeks old and Thunder 9 months) she has had him right under her thumb. Luckily, Thunder doesn’t seem to mind one bit. Happy Birthday Leia Bear, we love you!
